About the Prep

St John’s Preparatory School was founded in 1956 by Peter and Barbara Hickman at their Borrowdale property. It began as a small family school with 13 pupils. It was their desire to establish a school for boys which offered a sound system of education in an atmosphere conducive to the growth and development of each personality. The school soon grew into a viable private school with 120 boys with a class in each grade from 1 to 7. The Preparatory School admits boys from the age of 5 to 12 for Infants, Junior and Senior Primary schooling.

By the late seventies, as St John’s became recognised as a reputable Preparatory School, it became necessary to change the governing structure of the school, which resulted in the formation of a Trust with a Board of Governors. Pressure on places was such, that in the early eighties the school doubled in numbers, and then trebled with three classes in each year group and a total of 525 boys. It continues to be a leading boys’ preparatory school in Zimbabwe.

How the Prep works!

At St John’s Preparatory School, we focus on the development of individual strengths and talents and are active in finding out where these lie in our pupils.
 
The academic timetable is arranged on a weekly cycle, Monday to Friday. Academic study takes up the morning, whilst sport, club and cultural activities occupy the afternoons.
 
Continual assessment takes place throughout the year, with periodic reports and feedback being sent to the parents. Regular Consultation Days for each grade are held and parents are welcome at any time to meet with the Head, Director of Academics, or his Class Teacher, to discuss their child’s progress.
In keeping with the aims of the Prep to develop each individual to his/her full potential and following the strong sporting tradition which is the hallmark of Zimbabwean private education, we offer a wide range of sporting disciplines, which are supported by quality coaching. The following sports are offered:-

Each student is expected to participate in at least one sporting discipline each term. The Prep has achieved tremendous results on the sports field in its short history.

During the weekday afternoons there is a full programme of sports, clubs, cultural activities and societies. A co-curricular programme is published at the beginning of each term. A wide range of activities is offered, and all boys are expected to participate in at least one sport and one cultural activity.

Parents whose children are in Grade 5 year carry out fundraising activities guided by the Grade 5 Fund Raising Committee.
 
Fireworks displays, family fun days, cocktail parties, special events such as breaking world records (in pick-up sticks) are all part of the PLC’s activities.

The Parent Liaison Committee (“PLC”)

These elected bodies represent the parent body of each respective school and provide the opportunity for continual liaison between the Headmaster and parents and to grow community spirit within the school. More specifically the PLC’s mandate is:-

  • to afford better communication between the School and the Board of Governors and parents, and to foster interest in the affairs of the School amongst parents;
  • to make suggestions for improvements;
  • to assist the Headmaster in matters of mutual interest;
  • to allocate funds raised for the School by Grade 5 parents in conjunction with the Headmaster.

The PLC runs bar and catering facilities at school events, co-ordinates form functions, sporting functions where necessary and endeavours to raise funds which can be used for various items specifically requested by the School.
